One thing that's not covered in that post (at least not that I saw) is that you don't have to have any skills to lead a fleet/wing/squadron, you just don't provide any bonuses if you don't. i.e. With Wing Command 3 and Leadership 5 (and some levels in the bonus giving skills) I can command either a squadron of 10, or 3 squadrons under a wing and provide bonuses to their members. However, I can also command a fleet or a fourth squadron under my wing if I want, I just won't provide any bonuses. I learned this through trial and error on a mining op last week. The only thing I am unsure of is if a wing commander provides bonuses to a squadron if it doesn't have a commander or has an unqualified commander (i.e. not enough leadership ranks for the number of people). It should, but I don't know that it does.

Wing Command allows you to lead multiple Squadrons with your bonus' (# of Squadrons dependant on your WC skill level) but it in no way allows you to take the place of the normal Squadron Commanders.
Of course if you are a Wing Commander only in charge of 1 Squadron....just make yerself Squad Commander...no need for Wing Command in that instance.
I hope I understood your question correctly.
That seems to make sense in how it would work, but I've found that "make sense" is not necessarily the case. All I was saying is that I haven't actually tried it. Well, I have, I just didn't really think about it and look at the result. On the mining op we ended up getting a squad too big for the person leading it and I can't recall if the Wing Bonuses were still applying to the squad members or not.
As far as having a wing with only one squad. It's good in cases where there are two people capable of giving bonues and the bonuses given are different. In my case, I give bonsues across the board except to mining. So I take the wing command and give our miner with the mining bonuses squad command. That way when our mining group grows past 10, I move the haulers and defenders out into a new squadron, since they don't need the mining bonuses anyway, and they can still get my bonuses. Not that I can actually command three squadrons, I'll probably divde up miners/haulers/defenders into their own squadrons for the ops.

To follow-up on my previous post. I tried it last night and when the squadron commander left system/docked, the squadron continued to recieve my wing bonuses.

Originally by: Satal Sonshi I'm not 100% on this part, but I think that you *CAN* mix&match them for your squad members. So, if you had ten squad guys + you (wing command) + your buddy (squad leader), the members would get all sets of bonuses; but you and your buddy would only get your own personal bonuses.
To be honest, I have NO IDEA why they would make that caveat about any commander's persons not getting bonuses from the upper tier. Sounds to me like it has something to do with forcing people into squadrons? Anyhow, good luck out there :)

A dev later stated that the squad commander only getting his own bonuses was a technical limitation that would be addressed in the future.
